At Damira, dental hygiene is at the heart of every procedure we perform: we want all of our patients to have strong, healthy teeth and gums. Gum health in particular is important because it is now well known that gum disease can not only cause tooth loss but also more wide-ranging, serious health problems: over a long period, bacteria from gum disease can enter the bloodstream and affect your heart and brain functions. We want to help you to avoid the need for more invasive procedures such as fillings, crowns and root canal surgery and we believe that the best way to do this is through regular check-ups combined with dental hygiene maintenance.

Cleaning & Hygiene At Damira

Our team of experienced dental hygienists are here to ensure that your gums remain healthy and your teeth are kept clean, free of tartar and plaque, and look the very best that they can. Under the NHS you are entitled to a scale-and-polish as part of your routine check-ups if your dentist considers this necessary to maintain the health of your teeth and gums; you can also arrange an appointment with our dental hygienist on a private-paying basis if you want to instantly brighten your smile. Regular cleaning and hygiene appointments with our dental hygienists will help you to avoid:

  • bleeding gums
  • pain and discomfort in your teeth
  • bad breath
  • stained teeth
  • tooth decay or loss

We offer a range of cleaning and hygiene services for you to choose from (see below).

How Are Cleaning & Hygiene Treatments Carried Out At Damira?

At your routine check-up (which should usually take place just twice a year), your dentist may offer you a scale-and-polish treatment that will gently remove tough tartar that may have built up on your teeth. This is usually found at the gum line and it is important to treat to prevent the development of gum disease and tooth decay. Traditional scraping methods may be appropriate, but usually an ultra-sonic wand is used to carefully remove the tartar that cannot otherwise be dislodged easily by brushing. A ‘polish’ is then applied using a circular electronic brush to buff your teeth to a shine, removing slight stains and making your teeth instantly whiter and brighter.

A visit to one of our hygienists will involve a careful and thorough examination of your mouth to assess your current gum health; they will be looking for signs of any bleeding or weakness in your gums and the presence of any bacteria or toxin levels. They will then carry out a deep clean of your teeth to remove any plaque and tartar including below the gum line. Our dental hygienists take great care to be gentle and careful – we know that many of our patients may feel anxious at having any kind of procedure carried out and we take great care to ensure that our patients are as relaxed and comfortable as possible throughout.

Will Cleaning & Hygiene At Damira Work For Me?

By maintaining the health of your teeth and gums, you can expect them to last for the rest of your life: it is no longer considered ‘normal’ for elderly people to have to have all of their teeth removed and replaced with dentures, thanks to the vast improvement in dental hygiene over recent years. We therefore recommend to all of our patients that they arrange regular appointments with our hygienists as well as our dentists. Once your teeth have been examined initially, your hygienist will be able to create a tailored treatment plan to suit your individual needs and will advise you on how often you will need to attend future appointments.

If you are particularly susceptible to gum disease, are elderly or on specific medications, you may need to visit our hygienist more often than twice-yearly as we usually recommend.

Children may also need to see our hygienist for fissure sealants to be applied on a regular basis (usually not more than twice yearly): this treatment is utterly painless and involves painting a substance on the biting surface of each tooth to give it extra protection against possible decay. This is necessary because children’s teeth are softer than adult teeth and children (however well supervised) can miss areas when brushing as their fine motor skills are not yet capable of giving their teeth a thorough and comprehensive clean. Your child’s dentist can apply a fissure sealant as part of an NHS appointment if they consider it clinically necessary to do so.

Our dental hygienists can also help you with:

  • giving up smoking (smoking stains your teeth and can lead to oral cancers)
  • removing stains
  • applying fluoride directly to your teeth to prevent decay
  • ensuring that your brushing and flossing techniques are optimal
  • choosing the correct hygiene products for your particular needs

How Long Does It Take To Keep Teeth Clean & Hygienic?

We recommend that you visit us just twice a year and book in with our dental hygienists at the same time as your visit to the dentist, in order to keep your smile in top condition. An appointment with our hygienist will typically take 10 – 15 minutes on top of your routine dental appointment of around 10 minutes. If you compare this to the amount of time you spend maintaining your hair at the hairdressers, or your car at the garage, this is very little time that is needed to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy!

At home, we recommend that you brush and floss your teeth twice a day for at least three minutes at a time: brush after eating breakfast and immediately before going to bed for optimal cleanliness and freshness.

Our Bespoke Cleaning & Hygiene Services

We offer a range of cleaning and hygiene services to suit your needs, budget and available time. We want to make accessing these services as easy and simple as possible to help you to achieve a healthy, beautiful smile with minimal effort.

Refresh & Restore

This treatment is ideal for patients who wish to maintain their oral hygiene for the long term through routine maintenance appointments with our dental hygienist, who will check the health and strength of your teeth and gums and ensure that they are clean and in optimal health.

During your appointment your gums and teeth will be thoroughly cleaned and descaled: even with the most scrupulous brushing and flossing at home there will be areas of your teeth where plaque can develop particularly under the gum line. Without proper treatment on a regular basis, you may develop periodontal disease, which can lead to tooth loss. A regular appointment with our dental hygienist twice a year will ensure that gum disease is kept at bay and your mouth, teeth and gums will remain clean and healthy.

Regular Refresh

This treatment option combines all of the benefits of Refresh & Restore with a Crystal Gloss (Airflow) Polish, for clean, healthy and shiny white teeth at a reduced cost.

Fresh Start

If you haven’t been to one of our hygienists before, or indeed if you haven’t visited a dentist or hygienist for a long time and are concerned about the health of your teeth and gums, you can start as you mean to go on with a Fresh Start. Aimed at our new patients, our dental hygienist will carry out a comprehensive assessment of your oral hygiene to identify any areas of concern that can then be properly addressed.

Your teeth and gums will also be given an extended clean and maintenance session; your dental hygienist will show you how best to care for your oral health at home and can recommend cleaning products that will suit you best in terms of your needs, lifestyle and budget.

Your Fresh Start treatment session will include our very special Crystal Gloss Polish which will leave your teeth shining, smooth and rejuvenated.
