National Smile Month: Tips for Better Oral Health

Did you know that National Smile Month is the longest running dental campaign in the UK? The campaign aims to raise awareness of the three best things you can do to improve your dental health.

These three things are very simple, but they’re the absolute best things you can do to keep your teeth in good health. In case you need a reminder, here are the three key recommendations for better oral health.

Brush your teeth twice a day

We should all be brushing our teeth twice a day. Dentists recommend that one of those times should be directly before you go to bed. It’s also really important to make sure you are using a toothpaste that contains the recommended amout of fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral that helps to keep your teeth protected from plaque and bacteria.

Visit the dentist regularly

Most dentists recommend a visit once every year for adults and every six months for children. However, some people need to visit their dentist more frequently. Each time you visit your dentist, ask when they would like to see you next.

Limit sugary drinks and foods

Sugary drinks and foods may be tasty, but they are not very good for us. Eating and drinking too many of these will increase the amount of sugar that is present on our teeth and gums. This sugar can become stuck to our teeth and cause plaque and cavities.

How important are these things?

These three things are simple to remember but will make a huge difference to the health of your teeth and gums. The better you’re able to stick to these recommendations, the healthier your teeth and gums are likely to be for many years to come.
