4 Warning Signs You Might Need a Filling

If you have a cavity in your tooth, the best thing to do is to get your dentist to look at it as soon as possible. They’ll be able to assess the problem and advise you on which type of filling would be the best choice to fill it.

It’s important to visit your dentist quickly. The longer you leave a cavity, the worse it’s likely to get. In many cases, an untreated cavity can turn into root canal treatment.

How do you know if you might need a filling?

Here are four warning signs that you may need a filling.

1. Sensitivity

Many people have naturally sensitive teeth, while others don’t. If you’ve never suffered from tooth sensitivity before but suddenly start, consider this a big warning sign! Sudden or increased sensitivity in one area of your mouth is also something to watch out for.

2. Sharp pain when eating

Experiencing pain when eating can be due to a cavity. Often you’ll feel a sharp pain when you try to eat with the section of your mouth where the damaged tooth is.

3. Ongoing toothache

This may be in addition to or instead of feeling a sharp pain when eating. If you’ve been experiencing an ongoing throbbing toothache, it could be due to an untreated cavity. The pain will usually be localised to one tooth or one area of your mouth, but it’s wise to visit your dentist for any type of ongoing toothache.

4. A dark spot on your tooth

If you can see a dark spot or even a hole on one of your teeth, we advise a trip to the dentist ASAP. What you’re seeing is likely to be a cavity.
